The short answer
Burnaby Hospital's redevelopment is proceeding in two phases. Phase 2 includes the Keith and Betty Beedie Acute Care Tower and expanded cancer care, with completion targeted around 2030. Vision 2030 would make timely delivery and transparent progress reporting a standing priority in every conversation with the Province.
Three things to know
- Hospitals are a provincial responsibility, but mayors are Burnaby's loudest voice to Victoria.
- Fraser Health selected a construction team for Phase 2 in 2024; the project includes a new acute care tower and expanded cancer care.
- Burnaby's population is growing; hospital capacity has to grow with it.
Why this matters to me
I served as Chief Operating Officer of BC Diabetes through Covid-19. I know what it looks like when capacity runs out and patients wait. Health care is not a file a mayor can leave on someone else's desk.
The honest comparison
What residents are asking
- Is the hospital tower and expanded cancer care on track for the current target?
- Who at City Hall is pushing the Province on this, publicly and consistently?
- How will residents be kept informed if costs or timing change?
My approach
- Make Burnaby Hospital's full redevelopment a standing item with the Province and Fraser Health.
- Use the city's planning tools — land, transportation and housing for health workers — to make the project easier to deliver.
- Report publicly on where the file stands, twice a year.
What you can hold me to
- 01A formal, public request to the Province and Fraser Health for regular updates on the timeline for Burnaby Hospital's remaining phases.
- 02A city working group on health-care capacity, including housing for health workers.
- 03Twice-yearly public updates on the file.
